The Sound of Thunder - Prologue

Inside a small, rickety wooden shed, a mother and daughter were locked in embrace.

"Mommy, I'm scared."

The child barely managed to choke out her words between sobs. The mother looked at her face, stained with such terror and despair for one so young. And, deep down, the mother too was terrified. But she could not let it show.

She would not.

Outside, lightning flashed. There was no running from the storm, and the mother knew her time had come. She looked at her daughter, and saw herself. This child must live, she thought. If only the child.

The wind howled; the door crashed open. The mother hastily bundled the child in a blanket, and ushered her under the bed.

A hollow sound, like screaming metal.

“Don’t worry, my child!” She shouted, her voice a whisper above the raging storm, even as the tempest bore down upon her.

“I am here.”

And just like that, she was gone, whisked away by the storm, leaving in her wake only a child’s cry and the sound of thunder.
