about

We call him the Tinker - a cranky, tired old man, all bones and feathers and dry spirit. The surface-dwellers know him as the Witch, the bogeyman they use to scare their children to sleep.

Truth is, they ain't far off the mark.

The Tinker runs the Gutter. Only his masks keep the noxious fumes at bay. Little wonder, then, that he's been able to keep his stranglehold on the snitches; he keeps them alive, and in return they act as his eyes and ears. That's how the Tinker knows everything that happens in the city, above or below.

He hands me a mask, made of cold steel. It's shaped like a cat's face. Ironic, given the situation - but then again, it's exactly the sort of thing the vindictive old bastard would do.

He looks even wearier than usual, as he peers at me through his goggles.

You've got a job to do, he says.
